What is cirrhosis?

Liver cirrhosis is a condition in which the liver gradually deteriorates and the liver is unable to function normally due to long-term damage. The liver performs many important functions in the body, including removing harmful substances from the body, cleaning the blood, and manufacturing vital nutrients.

When the liver is damaged for some reason, it tries to repair itself. In this process, scar tissue (scratches like scratches on tissues) is formed. These scar tissue replaces the healthy liver tissue and partially blocks the flow of blood to the liver. As scar tissue begins to accumulate, the liver's ability to function properly declines. As cirrhosis progresses, more scar tissue builds up and interferes with liver function. Cirrhosis can have many causes, the most common being chronic alcoholism and hepatitis.

Cirrhosis can be diagnosed by blood tests, imaging tests, or biopsy. Cirrhosis is not curable, so its treatment involves managing the symptoms and complications of the disease and preventing the condition from getting worse. In more severe cases, a liver transplant is the only option.

He was a member of the government of India, ministry of health & family welfare committee on the formulation of national guidelines for liver transplantation in 2007. He was awarded the Vishisht Sewa medal for meritorious service by the president of India on 26 January 2009. Dr. Seth took premature retirement from armed forces medical services in 2009.
